  Songfight! High and Dry (2006)
Songfight! High and Dry is this year's annual gathering of the Songfight! online music community, and this one promises to be bigger than ever. It offers multiple days of music, introductions, recording, and debauchery culminating in 2 days of live performances at one of Santa Cruz's leading music venues. Songfighters will come from all over the world, bringing their unique culture and bad music to share with others who are doing the same thing. Playing before a captivated, friendly, and often inebriated crowd, you are playing in front of friends, even if they are virtual ones. Songfight! Live is open to all songfighters, although preference may be given to those songfighters who actually have submitted more than once.

REGISTER!   PERFORMERS! We have created a form for you to provide basic information to help the organizers out. Please visit this page and let us know what's cookin'!

DISCUSS!   There is a special forum on the Song Fight! message board for discussion related to the show. Arrange for collaborators, discuss travel, lodging, activities, etc. Go here.

The Show   The music will take place over the course of 2 days, with each show starting around 7:00 and going until about 11. Load in and set up is at 6pm each night. A schedule will be created once people begin to confirm their intent to play. There are a number of folks that live in the bay area who will most likely come and play, so the schedule is likely to fill up pretty quickly. The club will provide a sound engineer, from whom we could most likely get a board feed for recording on somebody's laptop. The club seats about 90-100. I will be promoting this locally as an all ages show, and the Cayuga Vault will also promote it on their website and music listings that get picked up by the local media.

The Artists   A record number of artists will be performing at Song Fight! High and Dry. Click here for more information.

The Town   Santa Cruz is the stereotype California beach town. Considered the birthplace of surfing in California, it has excellent beaches, a very nice walkable downtown area full of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, and a boardwalk amusement park on the main beach. It is also the home of the University of Caifornia Santa Cruz. It sits on the northern terminus of Monterey Bay, where it meets the Pacific Ocean. It is about 75 miles south of San Francisco, and about 30 miles west of San Jose.

The Weather   The weather in August will most likely be warm during the day, with the potential to be chilly at night. Northern California is notorious for it's summer fog, and Santa Cruz is no exception. Santa Cruz usually doesn't have as much of a daytime fog problem as say San Francisco has, but it can and often does come in at night. Which means nights can be downright cold and blustery. Bring at least one fleece jacket kind of thing.

Getting There   Closest major airport is San Jose, about 30 miles away. San Francisco airport is about 1.5 hrs. Oakland about 1 hour. San Jose is a good airport to fly into. Besides being the closest to Santa Cruz, it's easy to get around in and often times cheaper.

Fun Stuff

Visit the Boardwalk. Make sure you ride the Giant Dipper. One of my favorite bands wrote a song about it.

Visit Downtown. Downtown Santa Cruz has lots of cool shops, places to eat, 2 multiplex theatres, 2 movie houses, record stores, bookshops, etc.

Go Surfing. Cowells Beach is friendly and easy for beginners, and has rentals on the beach.

Shop for used music gear. We've got 4 really good music shops with used gear.

Go fishing. Or crabbing. The Santa Cruz municipal wharf is open until 2am and parking is free to cheap. Plus it's fun to hang out on the pier and check out the sea lions.
